Traveling Frugally and Having Fun

If you are running a little bit behind on your budget, it doesn’t mean that you have to skip out on vacation this year. There are plenty of ways that you and your family can have a wonderful time while traveling for much less cost than you might otherwise expect. There are a few tips regarding lodging, food, entertainment, and transportation that can end up saving you thousands of dollars on your travel expenses. And while you may initially be turned off by the idea of traveling cheaply, you will find that you can still have tons of fun and experience many wonderful entertainment events on a smaller budget.

First of all, you can save a lot of money by staying at local inns or hotels. While the nationwide chains might be newer and a bit nicer looking, the local locations generally charge a bit less. While this may mean that you are missing out on a few features, you will find that the benefits outweigh the cons. For one thing, staying at a smaller hotel will get you a more culturally rewarding experience. Rather than staying in a cookie-cutter hotel, you will be staying somewhere that has been personalized. The staff at smaller hotels can sometimes be more personable as well.

You can save quite a bit of money on food by looking for “hole in the wall” food places. Every city has hidden treasures of cuisine that aren’t known for being fancy or expensive. While you might not be getting a five-star four course meal at these smaller restaurants, you will get a much more personalized experience that is more true to the local culture, giving you and your family an exciting and memorable experience. You can also save money by going grocery shopping! Even if you are not staying in a hotel with a kitchen, you can save money by getting low cost picnic items. Enjoying a picnic at a local park is a great way to experience wherever it is that you are visiting.

Transportation can be a large percentage of the cost of your trip. If you know where to look, though, you can save quite a bit here as well. First of all, don’t be afraid to look at discount airlines. Some discount airlines actually have higher customer service ratings than the luxury airliners do! If you are staying in a city, consider renting bicycles rather than a motor vehicle. Also, using local public transportation can save you a lot of money as well, and can also help you discover local attractions that you might not otherwise have known about.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to save money while abroad. Get rid of the old conception that an expensive vacation is the best kind. You might end up having more fun with your frugal vacation than you have ever had before!
